Root Canal Retreatment – Killarney, Co. Kerry
With proper care, teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime. Occasionally a tooth that has been treated may not heal properly and may become painful or diseased. An additional procedure may be able to support healing and save the tooth.
Why do I need another endodontic procedure?
As can happen with any dental procedure a tooth may not heal as expected for a variety of reasons:
- Narrow or curved canals were not treated during the initial procedure
- Complicated canal anatomy went undetected during the initial procedure
- Placement of a crown or restoration was delayed following the endodontic treatment
- Restoration did not prevent salivary contamination to the inside of the tooth
- New decay can expose the root canal filling to bacteria
- The tooth sustains a fracture
What does retreatment entail?
The tooth will be reopened to gain access to the original root canal filling. This may require removal of previous filling materials, crowns and possibly posts. The root canal filling will be removed so the endodontist can carefully examine the inside of your tooth. Using magnification and illumination they can search for any additional canals or anatomy that requires treatment. After disinfecting the canals they will be filled and sealed. After treatment is completed a periodic review by the endodontist will be arranged. You may be advised to return to your referring dentist for provision of a full coverage restoration (crown).
