Root Canal Treatment – Killarney, Co. Kerry

What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the diseases of the dental pulp and its supporting structures. Endodontic treatment is an economical way to preserve a tooth in function especially when the cost of tooth loss and replacement is so high.

General dentists can perform endodontic treatment however patients are often referred to an endodontist when the case is complicated or more difficult than usual.

What is an Endodontist?

Endodontists are dentists with special post graduate training in this field. Modern techniques and equipment are utilised for this including a dental microscope to provide the best outcome.

Why would I need endodontic treatment?

Endodontic treatment (root canal treatment) is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected. The most common reasons for this include dental decay, cracks, fractures or trauma. If pulp inflammation is left untreated it can cause pain and lead to an abscess.

What does root canal treatment entail?

The endodontist will perform a detailed history and examination of the tooth and adjacent structures including radiographic analysis prior to commencing treatment. Using a microscope the canals are carefully cleaned, shaped and disinfected and the prepared space is then sealed. Once treatment is complete a permanent restoration is placed. A periodic review is carried out by the endodontist. In many instances you will be advised to have a full coverage restoration (crown) completed by your referring dentist.
